In this breast reconstruction technique, a silicone balloon is usually placed under the skin and muscle in a first step. After healing, this balloon can then be filled with saline solution at 3-week intervals until it reaches the desired size, thereby pre-stretching the skin and muscle. Finally, in a second operation, the expander is removed and replaced by a definitive silicone prosthesis.
